Farms remove
internal fences for game!
The neighbours of
seven adjoining farms have removed the internal fences between
our properties and enclosed all the properties with a
game fence.
The
enclosed area is about 240 hectares and spans the kopjes and
kloofs which lie on our respective properties.
Zebra, Gemsbok, Kudu, Blesbok, Impala, Blouwildebees and
Rooihartbees have settled in well. We have had excellent rains
over the past few months and the game are thriving. Quite a few
young have been born.
And then there are, of course, “the resident”
creatures which move from farm to farm: warthog,
Black-backed Jackal, duiker,
porcupine and rabbits. From time to time we see signs of leopard
moving over the property. Guests at a neighbouring lodge have
notched three sightings of leopard and one of the local farmers
towards Hekpoort is complaining bitterly that his chickens have
been chosen as food by the leopards!
We also have a
pair of Black-chested Snake-eagles which have acquired
“resident” status.
